Biography:
Katarzyna is interested in onomastics as well as Computer-mediated communication (CMC), and the construction of identity online forms a central plank of her research programme. She received her PhD in Russian Studies from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, in 2017. The thesis 'Names on the Internet: Towards Electronic Socio-onomastics' involves the online naming system, a largely unexplored topic, and investigates the role of usernames in identity construction, using data gathered from a forum on the Russian Internet. The analytical framework is based on Ethnomethodology, with Membership Categorisation Analysis, Conversation Analysis and Discourse Stance used to analyse the data. Amongst others, Katarzyna has contributed chapters to two volumes, 'The Oxford Handbook of Names and Naming' (2016) and 'Names: People, Places. Perception and Power' (2016) which are, to her knowledge, the first book chapters relating to internet naming published in the field of name study. She also holds a master’s degree in Russian Philology from the University of Bialystok, Poland. The thesis included a dictionary and linguistic analysis of names from a 16th century Polish town Narew. Katarzyna is a member of the Princess Dashkova Russian Research Centre at The University of Edinburgh as well as the International Council of Onomastic Sciences and the American Name Society.
