Biography:

Ph.D. Brown University 1983 on Zaccolini's Prospettiva del colore and the Heritage of Leonardo. Since then, I have researched Leonardo da Vinci's theory of aerial perspective and the reception of Leonardo's writings in the 16th and 17th centuries. I have explored the relationship between theory and practice, particularly in regards to color, and the early 17th century commentary of Zaccolini.

Current research areas:

working on two independent books: Leonardo and the Invention of Aerial Perspective, which is a study of the theory and practice of aerial perspective from 1490 - 1650.
and another called Making Sense of Leonardo which examines efforts in 1630-35 to make sense of his ideas in terms of current understanding of human movement, light and shade, draperies, and to reassess his importance as a writer, revising Vasari's negative view.
and preparing an anthology of papers on Aerial Perspective in Early Modern Europe

Recent scholarly activity:

Three articles due to appear this year or early next, one on coloring in Domenchino's paintings, another on the theory and practice of Jean  Etienne Liotard, and a third on Zaccolini and Leoanrdo.  Also wrote a review for Burlington Magazine on the new Bellori Life of Domenichino but its publication has not yet been scheduled.
