Biography:
I received my Ph.D. in History from Columbia University in 1993, then served on the faculties of Arizona State University West and UC San Diego. I left my tenured post at UCSD in 2006 to become an independent scholar and historical consultant based in Los Angeles. My research focuses on the history of North American cities, suburbs, and metropolitan areas. I’m completing my third book, titled The New Suburbia: Diversity and the Remaking of Suburban Life Since 1945 (Oxford, forthcoming), with grant support from the Haynes Foundation, NEH, ACLS, Huntington Library, and UCLA. I’m currently working on two grant teams – an NEH digital humanities grant with the USC Libraries, and an EU Erasmus+ grant with a transnational group of scholars studying cities and suburbs. I serve as co-coordinator of the L.A History and Metro Studies group at the Huntington Library, and in the past served on the governing council of the American Historical Association, advocating on the issue of democratizing research access for all scholars. I also co-founded the company History Studio, and currently am head of operations.
