Biography:

I am an independent researcher and freelance archaeologist with a PhD in Archaeology and over 20 years' experience in British commercial archaeology, Egyptology, archival and collections research. I specialise in the contextualisation of archaeological material in the field, the museum, the archive and in public through regional archaeological research, Geographic Information Systems, satellite remote-sensing, archival and collections research and management, and digital methods of analysis presentation and interpretation.

Current research areas:

My research currently focusses on Geographic Information System mapping and archaeological site location, and the production of maps, databases and digital applications locating archaeological sites, features and objects for both traditional and online publication. I am working on further research into the Hogarth collection at the British Museum, focussing on using the archival papers to relocate and map the tombs excavated by David George Hogarth at the Gebel Asyut el-Gharbi, near Asyut in Egypt. I am also mapping and locating Egyptian sites as part of separate research for both the British Museum database and Egypt Exploration Society, seeking to create resources that are both academically robust and fit for 21st century digital applications.

Recent scholarly activity:

I currently have three papers under review:
Pethen, H. Review: A detailed history of decipherment and subtle critique of Eurocentrism at the ‘Hieroglyphs: unlocking ancient Egypt’, exhibition British Museum, 13 October 2022 – 19 February 2023. Research in Egyptian Archaeology & Cultural Heritage.
