Biography:

Dr. Howard G. Barth received his BA in chemistry (1969) and PhD in analytical chemistry (1973) from Northeastern University in Boston, Mass. After a postdoctoral fellowship in clinical chemistry at Hahnemann Hospital, Philadelphia in 1973, he joined Hercules Research Center in Wilmington, Del. where he became group leader within the analytical chemistry department. In 1988, Howard accepted a research position with the DuPont Company, Wilmington in what later became the Corporate Center for Analytical Sciences.
Howard was appointed assistant editor and then editor of the ACS (American Chemical Society) Del-Chem Bulletin (1976-81), and held a number of positions within the Delaware ACS Section: Analytical Chemistry Topical Group chair (1976), secretary (1986), chair (1988), and councilor for three terms.  At National ACS, Howard was a member of the Nominations and Elections Committee, Membership Affairs Committee, Admissions Committee, Chemical Abstracts Service Committee, and Analytical Chemistry Awards Committee.  Also, Howard served on the Analytical Chemistry editorial advisory board (1983).  For many years he authored or coauthored articles for Analytical Chemistry Biennial Fundamental Review and Analytical Chemistry Biennial Applications Review
Howard was assistant professor of chemistry at Northeastern University (1981), instructor at the chemistry department, University of Delaware (1982), and a visiting industrial scientist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.  He frequently taught short courses at ACS meetings, and for the  Delaware Valley Chromatography Forum, Minnesota Chromatography Forum, and Washington, DC Chromatography Forum.
Howard was cofounder and chair of the International Symposium on Polymer Analysis and Characterization, Ltd (ISPAC) (1987-2007) where he also served as short course organizer and instructor. He was assistant editor of the Journal of Applied Polymer Chemistry (1986-88), series editor of Springer Verlag’s Lab Manual of Polymer Science (1987-2006), and was founder and editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Polymer Analysis Characterization (1992-2007), where he is presently editor emeritus.
He has authored or coauthored about 130 technical articles and reviews, including edited or coedited books, and a coauthored monograph.  Howard has lectured and taught widely, both nationally and internationally, in the areas of chromatography and polymer characterization.  He has been research advisor to graduate students, a mentor to a DuPont postdoctoral fellow, and served on Ph.D. thesis defense committees as an external examiner. In 2004, he received the Delaware ACS Section Award for Outstanding Contributions to Chemistry.
His consulting activities include separation science, polymer characterization, and general analytical chemistry. Presently, he writes feature articles on chromatography fundamentals for LC/GC North America and is a frequent book reviewer for Isis, A Journal of the History of Science Society. Howard presently teaches a short course on size exclusion chromatography at the Eastern Analytical Symposium.

Current research areas:

Howard's current  research interests include chromatographic theory, separation science,  properties of polysaccharides, the writings of Primo Levi, and the chemical industry of  Buna-Monowitz (Auschwitz III).

Recent scholarly activity:
