The goal of this site is to provide useful information for NCIS members, other interested independent scholars, institutional scholars, and the public. It is intended not only to share information about NCIS but also to serve as a helpful source of information and WWW links for working scholars in a wide range of fields. In order to make it useful to as many scholars as possible, it has been developed with a minimum of graphics, frames, and other sophisticated Web features. However, many of the sites included in the links, particularly the museum sites, are rich in graphics. We would greatly appreciate comments on the usefulness of the site and suggestions for improvements. Send them to the webmaster.

The links provided in this site have been unscientifically and unsystematically selected according to the following criteria:

  • scholarly interest and usefulness
  • free
  • comprehensive

Links generally point to WWW "libraries," "collections" or "meta-sites"--that is, they connect readers to large collections of links to a set of related sites. For example, you are more likely to find a link to a site that contains a collection of other links to historical web sites than a link to a page on Leonardo. The idea is to give scholars a first place to start a new search outside the sources they already are comfortable with and to give those new to the web some idea of the sort of scholarly resources available.

We have tried to avoid commercial sites. However, there are a few sites, such as CARL Uncover, bookstores, and university presses, that are included because of their value to working scholars. In addition, some links point to useful information (mostly "how-to" information) that is mounted on a commercial site. Many of the "meta-sites" also include a few commercial links. We have emphasized research collections and have not included sites intended for k-12 students. While we welcome college teachers, our links do not include information specifically for pedagogical use such as curricula or syllabi. We have tried to pay particular attention to public sites and organizations, such as public libraries.

Announcements focus on the activities of NCIS and its affiliate societies. Please send announcements to the Webmaster. General academic announcements, conference announcements, calls for papers, etc., may be found on the web sites for H-Net, the Chronicle of Higher Education, and the Scholarly Societies Project. Announcements can also be found on web sites devoted to individual societies or disciplines.
