National Archives and Records Administration, this site has a rich collection of documents and images. 


ANTHROPOLOGY

Anthro.Net  Large collection of internet based journal articles, well developed topical sites and bibliographic references for anthropology, archaeology, history, linguistics, psychology, sociology and other social sciences

Anthropology on the Internet for k-12 From the Smithsonian.  Belies its title by including professional-level links.  Includes Archaeology, Area Studies, and Languages/Linguistics

WorldWide Arts Resources: a comprehensive meta-site for Arts information. This site has recently moved to the University of Michigan


ASIAN AND PACIFIC STUDIES

AsiaSource: Provided by the Asia Society, a comprehensive meta-site for Asian languages, art, history, current events, exhibitions, and reference information. Recommended.

Coombsweb: From the Australian National University, lots of resources.  Strong in Pacific National resources

PAIR: Portal to Asian Internet Resources.  Large selection of websites, arranged by country.  Most in the language of the country selected.  Annotated but poorly organized.  For larger countries, selecting the country produces a bewildering assortment of heterogeneous resources arranged in alphabetical order.  Keyword search is available.


BIOGRAPHY

Biography database: a commercial source for biographical information on about 15,000 individuals. No charge. Searchable. Relies heavily on the Cambridge Biographical Encyclopedia

Lives, the Biography Resource: provides listings of web sources for individuals who have died.  Searchable by name.  Nice grouping of biographical resources under "collections:" profession, region and "eras" (this is a loosely chronological listing of special topics).  


BIOLOGY

Biology on the Web, From the Blacker-Wood library at McGill University.  A short, well-annotated list of biology sites.


CLASSICAL/ANCIENT WORLD STUDIES:

 Classics Search: From the University of Swansea, Wales. 

Exploring Ancient World Cultures  From the University of Evansville.  Unfortunately the "Argos" search engine appears to be offline but there's still plenty to see here beyond the original sources that lead each section

 ECONOMICS

Economics web resources: from Helsinki, a very comprehensive list of sites.

EH.Net website for Economic History includes book reviews, syllabi, and a calculator for past price equivalents.  Less obvious but available through tabs on the homepage,  are a very comprehensive list of "related websites" and of "databases" containing historical economic data

WWW Virtual Library: Economic and Business History: Lots of links, well organized but not annotated. Maintained by the Netherlands Economic History Archive


EDUCATION

History of Education and Childhood by Sherman Dorn  An interactive website including research proposals and multi-user web logs. 

Search Edu.com: Claims 20 million educational sites including universities, other sites, indexed and ranked in order of popularity. I didn't count them. Fast. Recommended.

The Educator's Reference Desk  At the beginning of 2004, the U.S. Department of Education dismantled the AskERIC and ERIC web services.  The Educator's Reference Desk appears to be the most viable substitute.

ERIC reauthorization news, including a table of relocated ERIC resources provided by  Kate Corby, Education and Psychology Bibliographer, Michigan State University Libraries 


FOREIGN STUDIES/DIPLOMACY

Foreign Affairs Online: A well-organized and comprehensive guide to foreign governments, the U.N., research tools, the U. S. and international maps. Recommended.

NationMaster  Large commercial collection of data on countries around the world including the U.S.

History of Cartography: from the Institute for Historical Research in London

Odden's Map Bookmarks: Back online! A very comprehensive site for map-related information. Nearly 9,000 cartographic links.  


HISTORY/HISTORY OF SCIENCE/HUMANITIES

Best of History Websites Lists of annotated historical websites arranged under very broad categories apparently intended for k-12 teachers and students.  Requires a lot of reading and sifting but worth a look. 

Early Modern England. Provides a comprehensive list of announcements and conferences.

ECHO:  Exploring and Collecting History Online - Science and Technology.  Replaces the WWW Virtual Library on Medicine, Science, and Technology. 

Ecole Initiative early Christian church history (to 1500). Includes biographical entries, chronology, documents, articles and images.

The Heroic Age is a website for a journal for scholars interested in the history of early medieval northwestern Europe.  If that sounds limited, look at the links which include such topics as  Vikings, Britons, Late Antiquity, Christianity, and Archaeology.   The site also offers a peer-reviewed journal by the same name and a column entitled "the independent scholar."

History Journals Guide. From the World Wide Web Virtual Library. A comprehensive listing of journals, bibliographies, and online lists in many languages.

History/Social Studies Web Site for K-12 Teachers  Dennis Boals' encyclopedic and well-organized site at a new web home

Labyrinth home page for medieval and classical links: a nicely designed set of links.

NetSerf: Internet Connection for Medieval Resources.

Orb: The Online reference book for Medieval Studies.  Complete textbooks on medieval history as well as innovative essays including "medieval misconceptions" and the Middle Ages for non- specialists.  

Public History Resource Center:  Provides announcements, information and links for public history.  Notable features include full-text articles by public historians and extensive web reviews on specific topics.

Centre for Reformation and Renaissance Studies Web resources for scholars.  From the University of Toronto. World History Links: A very short, annotated list of major history sites

WWW Services for Historians. Comprehensive listing by category, of web sites. Includes a category for "Conferences and Calls for Papers" and one for "Grants." Recommended. 

Victoria Research Web: an offshoot of the discussion list, Victoria. "Research" section provides links to such British sources as the National Register of Archives, which has a set of topical "research sheets" on subjects such as "crime" and "women."

The Voice of the Shuttle: a huge mega-site with well-organized links to all humanities disciplines. Recommended 


INDIGENOUS PEOPLES

NativeWeb Resource Center Includes links to such areas as Anthropology, Environmental sites, History, Languages, and Art related to Indigenous Peoples including Native Americans. 


INFORMATION STUDIES

Current Cites: from the Berkeley Digital Library SunSite. Articles on information technology selected by a team of librarians. The set of annotated citations is emailed to a mailing list and is available online. All the items that are available on the Internet are also retrieved and indexed. A typical issue provided citations on such topics as distance learning, systems that libraries could used for creating automated online catalogues, search engines and online scientific publishing.


LANGUAGES

Ethnologue:  From SIL International, an organization for speakers of less common languages.  Offers extensive language catalogues, maps, computer tools, bibliography. Catalogs more than 6,700 languages. 

I Love Languages Well-organized, comprehensive set of links. Replaces the Human Languages Pages.  Recommended

LAW

American Society of International Law (ASIL) A series of short introductions and extensive reference links on topics such as human rights and intellectual property.

Global Legal Information Network Searching this site returns legislation on a given topic from all over the world.  Search by jurisdiction, date, subject, and language.  Provided by the Library of Congress

Guide to Law Online from the Library of Congress. Prepared for the Global Legal Information Network. Still a work in progress.

Hieros Gamos: Law and Government. A hybrid between a search engine and a website that combines law and government sites.

Law and Politics Internet Guide: well-organized and easy to use. Recommended.

Tarlton Law Library Guide to Legal History Resources on the Web: A selective, annotated guide to legal history resources on the World Wide Web, updated regularly, with special emphasis on sites describing archives and rare book collections relevant to legal history, as well as full-text sources.

Virtual Law Library: Links to legal information sites.  


  LITERATURE

Comics Research bibliography: No joking, the editors have assembled an impressive bibliography of over 5,000 items on comics and provide an extensive collection of additional links. 

Literary Resources on the Net: especially strong on eighteenth century sources.

Online Literary Criticism Collection From the Internet Public Library, contains1043 critical and biographical websites about authors and their works that can be browsed by author, by title, or by literary period

Victoria Research Web: an offshoot of the discussion list, Victoria. "Research" section provides links to such British sources as the National Register of Archives, which has a set of topical "research sheets" on subjects such as "crime" and "women." 


MATHEMATICS

History of Mathematics Website: Maintained by David Joyce at Clark University. Not as well organized as it might be, but a storehouse of information including biographies of over 1000 mathematicians, a timeline, and bibliographies. Provides a link to a fascinating text of Euclid's Elements, in Java script.

Internet Resources in Mathematics: large set of annotated, reviewed sites. Recommended, especially the page of resource lists and catalogues listed by topic

Mathforum: The leading k-12 math site on the Internet also includes sites for college and graduate education. 


MEDICINE

Hardin Meta-directory of Medical sites: Links to web lists of other medical sites. Arranged by subject and searchable

 Medical Matrix: Ranked, peer-reviewed, annotated links aimed at practitioners and sophisticated readers

 National Library of Medicine Provides links to health-related websites as well as library resources

Worldwide Internet Music Resources: from the William and Gayle Cook Music Library, Indiana University School of Music  


 PHILOSOPHY

Bjorn's Guide to Philosophy: (English version): provides links to individual philosophers, philosophy departments, conferences etc. Not currently being updated.

Contemporary Philosophy of Mind: An Annotated Bibliography: Recent work in the philosophy of mind, philosophy of cognitive science, and philosophy of artificial intelligence. Topics are grouped into 55 main subtopics. Many items are annotated. This site does not have a search engine.

Guide to Philosophy on the Internet: Edited by Peter Suber, who also developed Hippias. Elegantly organized and comprehensive. Recommended.

Noesis: Philosophy on the Web:  Well-organized and searchable web index to philosophers and philosophical concepts.  Innovative in indexing the work of contemporary philosophers and enabling them to distribute and update their work.  Edited by Anthony F. Beavers (University of Evansville) Recommended

Looking for Hippias?  It has been taken off the web.  


POLITICAL THEORY

Political Theory Daily Review is a portal weblog with summaries of stories and articles in the news, divided into three sections: "Newsroom" "Town Square" and "Ivory Tower".  Updated daily, this site offers a lively and interesting key to a wide range of materials.  Requires regular visits.  Site also provides links.


 PSYCHOLOGY

Social Psychology Network: Maintained by Scott Pious at Wesleyan University.  Large, easy to navigate and searchable 


RELIGION

Comparative Study of Religion: From the University of Washington, a meta-site with links to sites for studies of the major world religions, as well as such topics as art and religion, women and religion, and religion and tolerance. 


SCIENCE

ECHO: Exploring and Collecting History Online, Science and Technology.  Site incorporates the WorldWideWeb Virtual Library for Science and Technology.  Sprawling,  but not very organized compendium of web links.  Homepage includes a list of oral history projects. 

History and Philosophy of Science, Technology and Medicine/ La Storia e la Filosofia della Scienza, della Tecnologia e della Medicina from the Instituto e Museo di storia e scienza in Florence:  A short, organized list including listservs.

Internet Directory for Botany. A huge collection of botanical links of all sorts including links to museums, archives, taxonomies, and economic botany links. A joint project shared by several scholars and libraries. 

Chemical Information Sources: From Indiana University. Choose "Selected Internet Resources for chemistry," and then "miscellaneous" for sources on the history of chemistry and biographies of chemists.

PLOS: The Public Library of Science and Medicine.  Open-access publishers of work in both science (especially biology) and medicine.  Also provides blogs and news. 

SciCentral: A gateway to thousands of science websites. Especially good as a guide to science news and commentary

Scout report for sciences: separate reports for Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Math, Engineering and Technology


 WOMENS STUDIES

Feminist Collections: A collection of resources for Women's Studies (see also Women andGender Studies, below)

Women and Gender Studies: large site maintained by the Women's Studies Section Collection Development Committee of the Association of College and Research Libraries: each subject area is edited by a librarian. Does not offer a search engine.
